What do you do with the money your earn from your commissions?

The only thing I purchased online out of luxury with my commission money is my palette ($11).  There are times where I have to use the money I’ve earned to make giclee prints or make personal payments (SATs, College Apps, Volunteers, etc.).  Unfortunately, commissions are my only source of obtaining money at the moment because I’m unable to get a part-time job due to family circumstances.  I’m trying to save up for a big lot of Winsor & Newton artist grade watercolors and Fabriano hot press watercolor paper, along with an X series Thinkpad for when I go to college.  So I guess all I’ve been doing is saving up money really. xD

There is a key difference between a friend and an acquaintance/schoolmate. When you graduate from high school, it is your friends that will stay with you and it is the acquaintances that will fade away.  You will know this when you meet a certain individual who will ask you a question somewhere along the lines of “do you know a person named  _____ ?” and if you happen to know that _____ person was from your high school, you now have two types of choices in response:


1.   An answer in which you respond in relation to: ” _____  was in my high school”

2.   An answer in which you respond in relation to: ”Oh,  _____  is a friend of mine”

  • If you chose option #1, the person of whom you named is with you every step of the way and your ties have not been separated.  The person of whom you named is considered one who you still meet and talk to even after graduation. 
  • If you chose option #2, the reaction of which you chose shows that the person of whom you named isn’t of utmost importance to you unless you follow up with option #1.  The person of whom you named has barely or have never talked to you after graduation.
  • Lastly, if you choose option #2 because you consider all your schoolmates your “friends”, then you will never know the key difference between a friend and an acquaintance/schoolmate even after looking at this post.  Go away.

My folding palette finally came in the mail today! I originally intended to buy a metal folding palette like the Holbein models; however, they’re just too expensive.  I rather purchase more artist quality watercolor tubes than a pricey palette.  I also didn’t want to get the filmsy $5 folding palettes at utrecht, so I met my palette preferences in the middle by purchasing a $11 folding palette online.  I’m glad that I can finally keep my watercolors in the slanted wells of this palette as opposed to a circle palette with surround wrap.   I plan to buy a bulk of W&N artist quality watercolors on ebay when I’ve gained enough money but until then I’ll just use my cotman set.  I thank you guys greatly for requesting commissions.  I don’t get an allowance and I’m unable to get a part-time job because my family can’t get another car for transporting to work, so commissions is a way I can buy some luxury here and there.
